The Red House Academy Science Department aims to deliver an engaging and enjoyable experience of science that emphasises the important role science has in society. Science is driven by curiosity of the world around us. With science, we can explain natural phenomena and develop technologies that improve quality of life. Science permeates our lives and it is becoming ever more important that we develop a generation of scientifically literate citizens.
We want all of our students to be successful in science and we have developed a curriculum accessible to all and fit for the scientists of the future.
Key Stage 3 curriculum:
In Year 7 and 8 students study a combination of biology, chemistry and physics modules that build on Key Stage 2, promote an enjoyment and interest in science and prepare for Key Stage 4. The module titles are:
Year 7 Biology: organisms(movement and cells), ecosystems(interdependence and plant reproduction) and genes(variation and human reproduction).
Year 7 Chemistry: matter(particle model and separating mixtures), reactions(metals and non-metals and acids and alkalis) and Earth structure(Earth structure and the universe).
Year 7 Physics: forces(speed and gravity), electromagnets(voltage and resistance) and energy(energy costs and energy transfer).
Year 8 Biology: organisms (breathing and digestion), ecosystem (respiration and photosynthesis), and genes (evolution and inheritance)
Year 8 Chemistry: matter (periodic table and elements), reactions (chemical energy and types of reaction) and Earth (climate and Earth resourses).
Year 8 Physics: forces (contact forces and pressure), electromagnets ( magnetism and electromagnetism) and waves (wave effects and wave properties).
Key Stage 4 curriculum:
In years 9, 10 and 11 students will study either AQA GCSE Combined Science (Trilogy specification, worth 2 GCSEs) or separate courses in GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics (all AQA).
The topics covered are as follows.
Year 9 Biology: cell biology; organisation (digestive system, heart, and plants)
Year 9 Chemistry: atomic structure and the periodic table; bonding, structure and the properties of matter
Year 9 Physics: energy; electricity
Year 10 Biology: infection and response; photosynthesis and respiration; homeostasis and response
Year 10 Chemistry: chemical changes; energy changes; rate of reaction and equilibria; chemical calculations; organic chemistry
Year 10 Physics: particle model of matter; atomic structure and radiation; forces
Year 11 Biology: inheritance, variation and evolution; ecology
Year 11 Chemistry: analysis; the atmosphere; using resources
Year 11 Physics: waves; magnetism and electromagnetism
