Northumbria Police Volunteer Police Cadets

Northumbria Police operates a volunteer cadet scheme for young people aged between 14 and 18 years. Our next intake of young people is in January 2017 and the recruitment for this is now open.

The police cadet scheme consists of a training programme that last up to 4 years so the ideal age to join is 14 or 15 years. Could you please broadcast the cadet scheme to your year 10 and older year 9 learners (must be 14 years old by the start of January 2017). The closing date for applications is Sunday 20th November 2016. It is possible for someone from the police to visit your school and speak to the young people but there is only limited time to do this before the closing date in two weeks. You may have already been contacted by your local policing team about this.

The scheme operates from six bases throughout the Northumbria force area and each group will take 18 new cadets on this intake. There is a scheme in Sunderland and this operates from a school close to the city centre. The group meets every Wednesday (during the school term) and at other ad hoc times for community events (such as the Sunderland Airshow, crime prevention initiatives, community patrols etc).

The Volunteer Police Cadets is a uniformed, voluntary youth organisation and is operated by the majority of police forces throughout the country. There is an emphasis on policing but there is no requirement to join the police service at the end of it. What the young people will get out of it is a range of new skills and experiences, getting involved and making a real difference to their local community, something worthwhile to put on their CV and talk about in interviews, new friends and the opportunity to achieve a Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The application process involves completing an application form online and then attending an interview for the successful applicants. There is a vetting check so certain young people with previous cautions or convictions may not be eligible for the scheme.
