We are absolutely delighted to be partnered with Leibherr, as part of the North East LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) "Enterprise Adviser Initiative".

Liebherr was founded in 1949 by Hans Liebherr with over 100 companies on every continent of the world. It has over 48,000 employees worldwide with a turnover of 8.6 billion Euros and an investment of 9.1 billion Euros. Liebherr is de-centrally organised consisting of units of practical size with responsibility for their own activities. The Sunderland site is part of the MCCtec division, along with sites in Rostock, Killarney and Nenzing (Austria).

Liebherr Sunderland Works was established 26 years ago as a manufacturing plant for all types of maritime cranes and cargo handling equipment. More than 85% of equipment produced in Sunderland goes to foreign markets with China, Singapore and South Korea accounting for half of the total production volume.

Liebherr Sunderland Works presently employs 31 apprentices on Advanced Apprenticeships in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. A structured training plan has been developed where work-based knowledge is passed down by highly skilled and experienced tradesmen, helping the apprentices to develop key skills on the job.

Liebherr has reaped the reward of Apprenticeships in so many ways by not only enabling them to address a skills gap, but they have also provided a host of other advantages to the business. It has been found that since Apprenticeships were embedded into the organisation, efficiency and productivity has increased. The business has also noticed a significantly lower turnover of employees as well as a visible cost saving due to not needing any temporary workers.

Apprenticeships allow the organisation to mold future employees in the way that they need, but they also influence the corporate social responsibility of the organisation.

During their Apprenticeships with Liebherr Sunderland Works, apprentices gain Level 2 and 3 NVQs in their chosen field, alongside additional training in skills such as fork lift driving. They are also encouraged to move on to further education. For the quality of its Apprenticeships, Liebherr Sunderland Works has been recognised as North East Medium-sized Employer of the year at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2013.
